Here you will find a wide range of recruiting rumors related to the University of Memphis and Coach Penny Hardaway’s 2021 recruiting class.

I’m starting this post up in late April of 2020 and will put a date stamp each time new information is added.

Sam Ayomide (Memphis)

10/13/20: Ayomide commits to Memphis!

10/6/20: Ayomide dropped a top 6 of Memphis, Kansas, Seton Hall, Illinois, Providence, and Wake Forrest. The 6’11” big man is listed as a 3-star on the 247Sports composite rankings. Currently all of the crystal balls have him committing to Memphis on October 13th at 7pm est when he will make his announcement.

In an interview with ZagsBlog, Ayomide had this to say about Memphis: “With Memphis, I’ve built a good relationship with the coaches and I’ve talked to Penny [Hardaway] and the coaching department almost every day. And they let me know that they really need me. And I also, I have a brother that’s coming to Memphis. Me and John [Camden], we are good playing together. And they said they are going to develop me.”

5/30/20: Reportedly a close friend with John Camden, the Tigers have offered the center along with other schools like Illinio, LSU, Providence, and La Salle.

Johnathan Lawson (Oregon)

10/7/20: Lawson announces that he will play his college ball at Oregon, joining his brother Chandler, who is currently a Duck.

9/23/20: Lawson tweets that he will announce his commitment on October 7th, which is his birthday. Memphis is officially back in the mix.

8/24/20: Though Lawson dropped a top five list that didn’t include Memphis, multiple analysts have said that coach Hardaway reached out and now Memphis is back in consideration.


5/12/20: The 4-star guard plays for Keelon Lawson, his father and former Memphis assistant, at Wooddale High School in Memphis. Lawson has offers from over 10 other schools, including Oregon, where his brother Chandler plays. Last season, Lawson was the TN Gatorade Player of the year and averaged 27 points and 14 rebounds per @ChuckLawson901. He is currently ranked 115th in the class of 2021 in the 247Sports composite rankings.

According to an interview with Stockrisers, “Penny Hardaway talked with him on the phone last night and will now begin recruiting him.” On his local ESPN radio show, host John Martin said that “Keelon Lawson thinks an offer is coming from Memphis for Johnathan Lawson.” Martin also reported that the Memphis staff is working on setting up a Zoom call with the Lawsons.

JD Davison (Alabama)

10/3/20: Davison announces that he will play his college ball at Alabama.

10/2/20: Davison has pulled up his decision date from Halloween to October 3rd…and then said that he will wait until a later date. So we really don’t know when he will commit. Memphis currently has a class of John Camden, Jordan Nesbitt, and Josh Minott. Davison is ranked as the #1 PG in his class by 247Sports.

9/18/20: @TravisBranham_ on Twitter: 2021 five-star PG JD Davison will announce his college decision in October 31, source tells @247Sports. Final six: Alabama, Auburn, Kansas, LSU, Memphis and Michigan.

8/21/20: Davison released his top 6 list via Twitter. The list includes Auburn, Alabama, Michigan, Kansas, LSU, and Memphis. As of now, 247Sports does not have any crystal balls published for the #2 point guard in the class of 2021.

8/15/20: Per TiptonEdits, Davison will he releasing a top 6 list soon. On his Twitter account, Davison also said “I have a surprise for y’all when I drop it”.


6/25/20: The 5-star guard from Alabama lists Memphis in his top 10.

John Camden (Memphis)

9/30/20: Camden announces his commitment to the University of Memphis!

9/27/20: Camden tells @TiptonEdits that he will be announcing his decision on September 30th. His final five are Memphis, Indiana, Nebraska, Miami, and VTech. Adam Zagoria predicts that Camden will announce a commitment to Memphis.

5/27/20: Camden is a 4-star forward for Archbishop John Carroll high in Pennsylvania. Based on the highlights on Twitter, Camden is known for his range from three. Coach Hardaway has extended him an offer.

Jordan Nesbitt (Memphis)

10/1/20: Nesbitt announces his commitment to the University of Memphis!

9/28/20: According to TiptonEdits: 2021 four-star Jordan Nesbitt will announce his college decision Oct. 1st at 2:00 PM CT, he tells me. Final 3: Memphis, Illinois, SLU.

8/17/20: Brian Snow of 247Sports says that it will be hard for teams to pull Nesbitt out of Saint Louis to play college ball in another city.

8/3/20: The 4-star 6’6” guard from Missouri has received an offer from Memphis. He was scheduled to play AAU with Brad Beal EliteHe. Also, he recently announced that he will be releasing his top 10 list on August 7th, just a few days after he received the Memphis offer.

James Graham III

Graham is a 3-slash-4-star forward from Wisconsin. Memphis extended an offer to him on 6/30/20.

8/19/20: Snow was correct in his assessment and Graham commits to Maryland per his Twitter account.

8/17/20: Over the weekend, Graham announced that he is pushing out his commitment date to later in the week. 247Sports recruiting analyst Brian Snow says that the forward is leaning towards Maryland or Auburn, with Wisconsin and Memphis on the outside of the recruitment at this point.

8/11/20: Graham announces he will commit on Monday, August 17th.

7/23/20: In an interview with ZagsBlog, Graham had this to say about Memphis.

“You can group Georgetown, Memphis and Vanderbilt together,” Graham said. “You’ve got [PatrickEwing, [JerryStackhouse and Penny Hardaway. Those three dudes have been there. They’ve done it and know what it takes to get to the NBA.

The schools after him the hardest appear to be Auburn, Maryland, Michigan State, and Florida State.


Kennedy Chandler

8/14/20: Chandler has told media members that he will announce his college commitment today. The 247Sports crystal balls heavily favor Tennessee.


4/30/20: Chandler releases a top 5 list that includes Memphis, Duke, Tennessee, Kentucky, and UNC.

4/27/20: The Briarcrest point guard will announce his final five schools this week. Though a local Memphis prospect, the 5-star player seems to be drawing most of his interest from schools outside of the 901, including Duke and Tennessee. He holds offers from all of the blue blood schools as well.

Brandon Murray

8/10/20: Murray to announce his commitment on 8/14/20. Crystal balls heavily favor LSU for the 3-star guard.


Josh Minott

8/8/20: Josh Minott, a 4* prospect has committed to the University of Memphis and coach Penny Hardaway! Minott is Hardaway’s first commit for the class of 2021 and puts the class ranking at #45 according to 247Sports.

8/5/20: National recruiting analyst and founder of gives his prediction on where Minott will choose on Saturday.

8/3/20: Minott tweets that he will announce his commitment on August 8th.

7/27/20: In an interview with 247Sports, Minott said that coach Cody Toppert is recruiting him on behalf of Memphis and also said the same magic words that many have uttered since Hardaway came to coach at Memphis. In the interview he also answered questions about his other top 5 schools.

I’ve also been talking to coach Hardaway and he’s just had an amazing career playing a position I’ve been trying to look at. He was a tall guard and that’s what I want to play in college.”

7/22/20: The currently-unranked 6’8″ player lists Memphis in his top 5.

Jalen Warley

8/9/20: Warley commits to Leonard Hamilton and Florida State


7/23/20: In an interview with Stockrisers, Warley said that he recently completed Zoom calls with Memphis, Virginia, and Florida state. He also stated that he does not have a timetable for a commitment and he also mentioned that the G-League has reached out to him.


4/23/20: Per Stockrisers, the Tigers have offered 4-star combo guard Jalen Warley.

Carter Whitt (Wake Forest)


4/27/20: Late last week, the Tigers extended an offer to 4-star point guard Carter Whitt. The 6-3 junior is a top 75 player in the class of 2021 according to the 247 Composite rankings. Whitt will play his summer ball with local Memphis group Team Thad of the EYBL circuit.

Chet Holmgren

7/7/20: After revealing that Memphis made the cut into his final 7, Holmgren did an interview with in which he said that he will commit in the early spring of 2021. He also mentioned that he hopes to take all his official visits in person, if the pandemic allows. The other schools in his top 7 are Ohio State, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Georgetown, Michigan, and North Carolina



5/15/20: In a 247Sports article based on the below video interview, Holmgren mentions that Memphis is one of the schools after him hard. Holmgren is currently ranked as the #2 player in the class of 2021. The seven footer has good handles and can shoot from the outside. He said he watches a lot of Kevin Durant film and models his game after him.

Charles Bediako


6/7/20: Bediako, a 5-star Canadian center announces that he will stay in the class of 2021. Memphis is one of the schools in a long list of suitors for the top 25 player.

Trey Patterson

6/18/20: Memphis cut from list.

5/23/20: Patterson is a 4-star forward in the class of 2021. He published his top 10 list recently and Memphis made the cut. He is being recruited by Penny and Topper and he had this to say in an interview with Stockrisers: “Coach Penny also said, that I reminded him of himself as a player because of my ability to play like a guard and grab rebounds, and start the break.”

4/27/20: Adam Zagoria reports that the 4-star small forward from New Jersey has stayed in contact with Memphis. He does hold an offer from the Tigers.

Moussa Cisse

5/1/20: Cisse drops his top 6 list which includes Memphis. He will re-classify to 2020 and his recruitment will now be tracked over on our 2020 running blog.

4/12/20: Cisse, a 5-star big man currently playing at Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, lists the Tigers in his top ten. Many speculate that he could potentially reclassify to 2020 or follow Jalen Green and go the G-League route.

Paolo Banchero

4/29/20: Banchero cut his list to six and it does not include Memphis.

4/27/20: According to Stockrisers, Banchero will cut his list to six this week. Banchero is a 5-star forward ranked in the top fice of the 2021 class. He is from Seattle and right now Washington owns all of the crystal ball predictions. Not much has been connecting Banchero and Memphis lately.

Jaden Hardy


4/17/20: Hardy lists Memphis in his top 12 (247Sports)

Jonathan Kuminga


5/1/20: On the “High School Basketball Happenings” podcast, Kuminga said there is a 50/50 chance he will reclassify to the class of 2020.

4/14/20: Kuminga, the top player in the class of 2021 who has Memphis in his top ten, told multiple sites that he will be cutting his list to five soon.
