Here you will find a wide range of recruiting rumors related to the University of Memphis and Coach Penny Hardaway’s 2021 recruiting class.

I’m starting this post up in late April of 2020 and will put a date stamp each time new information is added.

Josh Minott

8/5/20: National recruiting analyst and founder of gives his prediction on where Minott will choose on Saturday.

8/3/20: Minott tweets that he will announce his commitment on August 8th.

7/27/20: In an interview with 247Sports, Minott said that coach Cody Toppert is recruiting him on behalf of Memphis and also said the same magic words that many have uttered since Hardaway came to coach at Memphis. In the interview he also answered questions about his other top 5 schools.

I’ve also been talking to coach Hardaway and he’s just had an amazing career playing a position I’ve been trying to look at. He was a tall guard and that’s what I want to play in college.”

7/22/20: The currently-unranked 6’8″ player lists Memphis in his top 5.

Jordan Nesbitt

8/3/20: The 4-star 6’6” guard from Missouri has received an offer from Memphis. He was scheduled to play AAU with Brad Beal EliteHe also recently announced that he will be releasing his top 10 list on August 7th, just a few days after he received the Memphis offer.

Jalen Warley


7/23/20: In an interview with Stockrisers, Warley said that he recently completed Zoom calls with Memphis, Virginia, and Florida state. He also stated that he does not have a timetable for a commitment and he also mentioned that the G-League has reached out to him.


4/23/20: Per Stockrisers, the Tigers have offered 4-star combo guard Jalen Warley.

James Graham III

Graham is a 3-slash-4-star forward from Wisconsin. Memphis extended an offer to him on 6/30/20.

7/23/20: In an interview with ZagsBlog, Graham had this to say about Memphis.

“You can group Georgetown, Memphis and Vanderbilt together,” Graham said. “You’ve got [PatrickEwing, [JerryStackhouse and Penny Hardaway. Those three dudes have been there. They’ve done it and know what it takes to get to the NBA.

The schools after him the hardest appear to be Auburn, Maryland, Michigan State, and Florida State.


Kennedy Chandler


4/30/20: Chandler releases a top 5 list that includes Memphis, Duke, Tennessee, Kentucky, and UNC.

4/27/20: The Briarcrest point guard will announce his final five schools this week. Though a local Memphis prospect, the 5-star player seems to be drawing most of his interest from schools outside of the 901, including Duke and Tennessee. He holds offers from all of the blue blood schools as well.

Carter Whitt


4/27/20: Late last week, the Tigers extended an offer to 4-star point guard Carter Whitt. The 6-3 junior is a top 75 player in the class of 2021 according to the 247 Composite rankings. Whitt will play his summer ball with local Memphis group Team Thad of the EYBL circuit.

JD Davison


6/25/20: The 5-star guard from Alabama lists Memphis in his top 10.

Chet Holmgren

7/7/20: After revealing that Memphis made the cut into his final 7, Holmgren did an interview with in which he said that he will commit in the early spring of 2021. He also mentioned that he hopes to take all his official visits in person, if the pandemic allows. The other schools in his top 7 are Ohio State, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Georgetown, Michigan, and North Carolina



5/15/20: In a 247Sports article based on the below video interview, Holmgren mentions that Memphis is one of the schools after him hard. Holmgren is currently ranked as the #2 player in the class of 2021. The seven footer has good handles and can shoot from the outside. He said he watches a lot of Kevin Durant film and models his game after him.

Charles Bediako


6/7/20: Bediako, a 5-star Canadian center announces that he will stay in the class of 2021. Memphis is one of the schools in a long list of suitors for the top 25 player.

Sam Ayomide

5/30/20: Reportedly a close friend with John Camden, the Tigers have offered the center along with other schools like Illinio, LSU, Providence, and La Salle.

John Camden

5/27/20: Camden is a 4-star forward for Archbishop John Carroll high in Pennsylvania. Based on the highlights on Twitter, Camden is known for his range from three. Coach Hardaway has extended him an offer.

Trey Patterson

6/18/20: Memphis cut from list.

5/23/20: Patterson is a 4-star forward in the class of 2021. He published his top 10 list recently and Memphis made the cut. He is being recruited by Penny and Topper and he had this to say in an interview with Stockrisers: “Coach Penny also said, that I reminded him of himself as a player because of my ability to play like a guard and grab rebounds, and start the break.”

4/27/20: Adam Zagoria reports that the 4-star small forward from New Jersey has stayed in contact with Memphis. He does hold an offer from the Tigers.

Johnathan Lawson

5/12/20: The 4-star guard plays for Keelon Lawson, his father and former Memphis assistant, at Wooddale High School in Memphis. Lawson has offers from over 10 other schools, including Oregon, where his brother Chandler plays. Last season, Lawson was the TN Gatorade Player of the year and averaged 27 points and 14 rebounds per @ChuckLawson901. He is currently ranked 115th in the class of 2021 in the 247Sports composite rankings.

According to an interview with Stockrisers, “Penny Hardaway talked with him on the phone last night and will now begin recruiting him.” On his local ESPN radio show, host John Martin said that “Keelon Lawson thinks an offer is coming from Memphis for Johnathan Lawson.” Martin also reported that the Memphis staff is working on setting up a Zoom call with the Lawsons.

Moussa Cisse

5/1/20: Cisse drops his top 6 list which includes Memphis. He will re-classify to 2020 and his recruitment will now be tracked over on our 2020 running blog.

4/12/20: Cisse, a 5-star big man currently playing at Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, lists the Tigers in his top ten. Many speculate that he could potentially reclassify to 2020 or follow Jalen Green and go the G-League route.

Paolo Banchero

4/29/20: Banchero cut his list to six and it does not include Memphis.

4/27/20: According to Stockrisers, Banchero will cut his list to six this week. Banchero is a 5-star forward ranked in the top fice of the 2021 class. He is from Seattle and right now Washington owns all of the crystal ball predictions. Not much has been connecting Banchero and Memphis lately.

5/1/20: On the “High School Basketball Happenings” podcast, Kuminga said there is a 50/50 chance he will reclassify to the class of 2020.

4/14/20: Kuminga, the top player in the class of 2021 who has Memphis in his top ten, told multiple sites that he will be cutting his list to five soon.
