The final domino: Precious Achiuwa chooses Memphis.

The Memphis Tigers fanbase – and the entire city of Memphis – can finally exhale in relief.

Penny Hardaway’s roster for the 2019 season looks to be complete.

On Friday, 5-star McDonald’s All-American Precious Achiuwa announced his commitment to the University of Memphis. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, the 5-star forward is the 14th best player in his class. There were hints of things going the Tigers’ way in the recruitment of Achiuwa when earlier this week Evan Daniels of 247Sports changed his crystal ball prediction to Memphis.

Other schools that were involved in the recruitment of Achiuwa included UConn, Syracuse, and Kansas.

After Boogie Ellis – a former Duke commit – announced earlier this week that he would be joining Penny Hardaway in Memphis, there was one scholarship remaining on the board for the Tigers. Both Achiuwa and fellow All-American Trendon Watford were viewed as likely candidates to fill that spot. It now seems that Watford will likely be going elsewhere for his college career.

Achiuwa is a 6’9″, 215 lb forward who is very versatile on both sides of the ball and a physically gifted athlete. Achiuwa was selected to play in multiple All-Star games this season including the McDonald’s game as well as the Ballislife All-American game.

Achiuwa is a likely one-and-done prospect and right now many analysts project that he – along with fellow Tigers pledge James Wiseman – will be a lottery pick in the 2020 NBA draft.

Before the commitment of Achiuwa, Memphis owned the 4th ranked recruiting class in 2019 – behind Kentucky, Duke, and Arizona. This commitment of one of the highest ranking prospects remaining bumps them up to the #2 class in the nation.

Since the publishing of this post, the rankings have been updated by 247Sports and Memphis now owns the #1 overall class.
