Memphis recruiting notes from Spring evaluation period

This past weekend marked the Spring evaluation period for NCAA basketball coaches. The Under Armour, Addidas, and Nike hoops events were in full swing and many high level coaches were out and about, trying to catch a glimpse of the talent they are hoping to add to their squads.

Penny being Penny

You can’t have a Memphis recruiting column without Penny Hardaway being the headline. Coach Hardaway showed up to the scene looking fresh, much to the dismay of fans of other schools.

Matthew Murrell – Team Thad

This local Memphis product is a 4 star shooting guard who plays at Whitehaven High School and has been drawing a lot of attention recently. SEC schools are recruiting him hard and he currently has offers from most of them in addition to the University Memphis and a few other schools. He plays his AAU ball with Team Thad. It is also of note that Coach Cal of Kentucky was spotted sitting court side watching Murrell over the weekend.

Terrence Clarke – Expressions Elite

Clarke is a 5 star wing in the class of ’21. Penny Hardaway and his staff have extended an offer (per Stockrisers) to the 6-6 SG who is currently listed as the best player at his position in his class per 247Sports. In a group of games over the weekend, Clarke averaged 19 points per game on 49% shooting from the field, including 44% from three. Other schools who have extended offers include UConn, IU and Georgetown.

Greg Brown – Texas Titans

Fellow highly touted recruit, Cade Cunningham, also plays for the Titans with Brown and made it easy for some of the heavy hitting schools to get the most bang for their evaluation buck over the weekend.

Brown is a 5-star forward out of Austin Texas who is listed at 6′ 8″ and 200 lbs. Brown likes to stretch the floor and hit shots from the outside. The forward averaged 17 points 8.8 rebounds in four games in the EYBL in Atlanta this weekend. He has an offer out from Memphis as well as a dozen or more other schools. It’s still early but crystal balls seem to have him favoring his hometown school, the University of Texas.

Kennedy Chandler – Mokan Elite

Chandler is a 6 foot sophomore point guard hailing from Memphis who attends Briarcrest Christian. He is a 5-star prospect who is getting a lot of attention lately, with plenty of offers rolling in.

Penny Hardaway and Mike Miller were both in attendance of his games over the weekend. This is a good guy to keep an eye out for over the next few seasons.

RJ Hampton – Drive Nation

One of the biggest question marks in Memphis recruiting right now is this guy, RJ Hampton. Hampton is a 5-star combo guard who was originally in the class of 2020, but just today told Evan Daniels of 247Sports that he is reclassifying to 2019. (This is HUGE!!!)

Hampton is explosive and scored 41 points against Phenom U on Saturday. For the weekend he averaged 28.8 points and 4.5 assists per game in the four contests.

The suspense is building to see where he will choose to play college ball. Those remaining on his list are Memphis, Kentucky, Kansas, and Texas Tech. Duke was originally in the mix, but with Tre Jones announcing he will stay in school another year, Hampton replaced Duke with Texas Tech.

Oakland Soldiers

Ziare Williams is a top 20 player in the nation for the class of 2020. He is 6’7″ SF and has multiple Pac 12 schools that have offered him in addition to North Carolina.

Jalen Green is a stud shooting guard in next year’s class and is a top prospect in the country at his position. Earlier in the recruiting process, it was thought that Green might re-classify to the class of ’19, but he squelched that possibility in an interview at the EYBL, saying he will stay in the class of ’20.

Chris Moore – Woodz Elite

Rick Barnes and co. are trying to steal some talent from the Memphis area and Chris Moore is one of the guys that the school from the East is interested in. Moore is a 4-star PF who is listed at 6’7″. He is in the class of 2020. Moore is averaging 17.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in EYBL play.
