Grizzlies star center, Marc Gasol, started out the season playing career level basketball. Through the first 20 games of the season, Marc was averaging 20 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.95 assists, and 1.3 blocks per contest while playing 35:02 minutes on average.
On November 27th, he tweaked his ankle against the Raptors in a home loss. In the the seven games since the injury, Gasol is averaging a line of 10.4p/6.8r/4.2a/2.2b while playing 33:53 minutes. In addition, there has been a noticeable lack of activity on both ends of the floor and some fans were calling for Marc to take a rest, hoping that the time off would allow him to get back to his regular form.
In those 7 games since the injury, Marc has failed to score over 15 points in a contest, however, last night against the Trail Blazers, he found ways to impact the game even though he only shot 4 of 15 from the field. He filled up the stat sheet with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 blocks. This was in addition to the dialed up defense he played — something that had been missing the past few weeks. He did this all in just 27:51 of playing time.
On Thursday morning, following this refreshing performance against the Trail Blazers, Marc tweeted out an image of the basketball power-stealing Nerdlucks from Space Jam.
It’s good to see Gasol keep things light as he works through his on-court struggles.
Bonus fact: Space Jam came out in November of 1996, a little less than three years before Jaren Jackson Jr. was even born.
The Grizzlies play two more games at home this week. Friday the Miami Heat come to town, followed by James Harden and the Rockets on Saturday. You can read a preview of these match ups HERE.
